FDC Colorado Open Moving To Vail In 2001

Colorado's prestigious state golf championship will team with one of the state's premier resort areas when the FDC Colorado Open moves to Vail valley next year.

Colorado Open Events executive director David Edmiston announced today that following the 2000 tournament at Saddle Rock Golf Club in Aurora, the FDC Colorado Open will return to its mountain roots in 2001.

The announcement came during a luncheon at which Colorado Open Events officials presented a $140,000 check from proceeds from last years events to the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

"The community of Vail has extended an invitation to host the FDC Colorado Open. They have been very generous and have made this a great opportunity for the future of the tournament," Edmiston said. "In Vail, there will be great community support and we hope that businesses and residents alike will become involved with the event."

Plans are to hold the 2001 tournament at the Sonnenalp Golf Club in Edwards during the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 2. Pro-am events will take place at a number of Vail and area courses, including The Hyatt Beaver Creek. The popular Midland National Life Million Dollar Hole-In-One contest will be retained at the base of Vail Mountain each day of tournament week.

The tournament will be hosted in conjunction with the Vail Valley Foundation, The Sonnenalp Foundation, The Sonnenalp Resort and Golf Club, The Hyatt at Beaver Creek, and the City of Vail. "The entire Vail Valley is very excited about having a premier event of this kind and make Vail it's home, " said Johannes Fassler, owner of the Sonnenalp Resort and Golf Club. A portion of the tournament proceeds will go to support the new cancer center located at Edwards.

Sonnenalp Golf Club at Singletree is recognized by Golf Digest, Colorado Golf, Golf for Women, and Ski magazines as one of the top resort courses in the country. Designed by Robert Cupp and Jay Morrish, it is a Scottish links-style course at an elevation of 7,800 feet. Sonnenalp, the only hotel-owned golf course in the Vail Valley, is open to the public as well as hotel guests and through private memberships. Doug Wall is the head professional.

The FDC Colorado Open has grown to become one of the most prestigious state opens in the country over its 36 years in existence. The tournament began at Evergreens Hiwan Country Club in 1964 and was played there through 1991. Inverness Hotel and Golf Club in Englewood hosted the tournament from 1992-1997, with Saddle Rock taking over in 1998.

"Saddle Rock Golf Course staff and the City of Aurora Golf Division staff have been tremendous," Edmiston said. "We very much appreciate their efforts in making the tournament a success over the last three years."

The 2000 FDC Colorado Open at Saddle Rock is scheduled for July 20-23. Colorado Open Events also conducts the Wells Fargo Colorado Women's Open and the HIS Group Colorado Senior Open. For information about any of the 2000 Colorado Events, call 720-283-6736.
