Golf Professional of the Month

Name: Bob Persichetti

Age: 31

How long have you been a golf professional: 10 years

Where are you currently a golf professional: Arrowhead Golf Club - General Manager and Head Golf Professional

How long have you been here: Since January 1999

What attracted you to the profession and how did you get into it: When I realized I was not going to last long playing baseball, I decided to try out for the golf team in high school. I quickly realized that I needed to work hard on my game to make the team and became a "range rat." I knew then that I wanted to pursue a career in golf.

Who were some of the influential people involved with getting you into this profession: Besides my high school coach, I would have to say that Jeff Johnson (current president of the Southern California Section) and Steve Harker have been the most influential people in my career. Steve actually tried to talk me out of the golf business when I first started working for him in Southern California, suggesting that I pursue a career in an industry where I could make some money. Ironically enough, he later hired me as the head golf professional at the Las Vegas National Golf Club in 1994.

What is your favorite aspect of the game: I believe that the game builds character and makes everyone involved a better person. You can learn all you want to know about one's personality by simply playing a game of golf with them.

If you could change anything about the game, what would that be: I would like to make it less intimidating for new golfers to take up the game. We need to provide everyone with an avenue to get into the game without having to be exposed to all of the negativity directed towards new golfers.

If you could give a piece of advice to a high handicapper, what would it be: I am not saying this to "plug" the PGA professional, but all golfers should take lessons to continue to improve. It is very difficult for a golfer to analyze his/her own swing. Many times what you believe is happening in your swing is the exact opposite of what is actually happening. Too many golfers are practicing the wrong thing and wasting their time on the practice tee. Make your practice time count and get some professional instruction.

What is in your bag: Ball: Titleist Tour Professional - Irons: Titleist DCI - Woods: Cobra - Putter: Ping Zing

What is your most memorable or gratifying experience in the game (anything): There have been many gratifying times for me in the game of golf, but probably the most gratifying experience was when the team at Arrowhead hosted a fundraiser for Columbine High School. The event sent us all on an emotional roller coaster, but in the end I believe it helped with the healing of the community. Just being involved with something of that magnitude after such a terrible tragedy is a day that I will never forget.
