The
New Fitzsimons and the Old
Traditions
he
fox at Fitzsimons knows. She
shyly greets the golfers in the
courtyard, then scampers off,
heading in the direction of the
new Bioscience buildings. The fox
at Fitzsimons knows that there's
a renewed spirit in the air, but
she also knows of the storied
history of this tree-lined golf
gem.
Started
with just three sand greens in
1918, this 18-hole club has
always held a prestigious place
in history. Former President
Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had
many family ties to Colorado,
played the course frequently in
the 1950s. Fitzsimons was one of
his favorites. After he suffered
a heart attack playing golf at
Cherry Hills Country Club, he
recovered at Fitzsimons Hospital.
Eisenhower played a lot of
"recovery" golf at Fitzsimons. It
proved to be a good place for our
President and the many thousands
of others who served our
country.
Now
that this Aurora course has been
open to the public for the last
three years, many civilian
golfers have been able to walk
the same fairways as "Ike."
Touted "The New Fitzsimons," the
578-acre site of the former Army
Garrison Fitzsimons is now home
to numerous medical and office
buildings including The Anschutz
Centers for Advanced Medicine,
the future site of the University
of Colorado Heath Sciences Center
and Hospital, The Children's
Hospital, and The Colorado
Bioscience Park Aurora. With the
golf course as an attractive
cornerstone and construction
booming, The New Fitzsimons will
undoubtedly set the standard, and
break records within the medical
and bioscience communities.
The
golf course record score hasn't
been touched since 1958. Amateur
golfer Master Sergeant Orville
Moody was stationed at
Fitzsimons, working as the golf
course pro. Moody shot a 63 in
the All-Army Championships held
at Fitzsimons. He started his
round off by hitting out of
bounds but recovered to make par
and then went on to make eleven
birdies to win the tournament. He
became the All-Military Champion,
played on the PGA Tour and won
the U.S. Open in 1969. Moody came
back to Fitzsimons often to give
clinics and to relive his
historic moment. His record still
stands.
Today,
new head professional Dan
O'Shaughnessy and his energetic
staff greet the regulars with
enthusiasm and respect and strive
to provide a great golf
experience and a friendly
environment. In the clubhouse,
there are great stories of golf
days gone past mixed with new
golfers with hopes of breaking
that elusive record. The golf
shop concentrates on combining
magnificent tradition with
innovative ideas for all
Fitzsimons golfers.
With
the influx of thousands of new
workers, patients, researchers
and medical personnel over the
next decade, the face of
Fitzsimons continues to change.
It is a blend of the past, the
present and the future. Wouldn't
it be fitting if in just a few
years from now, we could add to
the lore of Fitzsimons that Dr.
"So and So" who found the cure
for cancer played the course
often while doing research? You
never know just whom you might
get to play alongside.
It's
a bright future at Fitzsimons -
just ask the fox. She knows. Come
be a part of history.
