Pole
Creek leaves golfers breathless
before they set foot on the
course
Like
the down-to-earth locals you'll
find in Grand County, Pole Creek
Golf Club is a little rough
around the edges -but that might
not mean what you'd think.
Shooting skyward 5,000 feet from
Pole Creek's impeccable fairways,
a ring of razor-toothed pinnacles
often leaves golfers breathless
before they set foot on the
course. These mountains are known
as the Continental Divide and the
Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. But
to golfers who play Pole Creek,
they're the sweetest views in the
state.
Tucked
away in a secluded mountain
alcove 8,600 feet above sea
level, Pole Creek specializes in
what General Manager Larry Burks
calls "refined adventure." "Golf
is a sophisticated, cultured
game," he says, "but that doesn't
mean it can't be breathtaking or
exciting. People love Pole Creek
because the air is invigorating,
the shots are as tough as you
want them, and true wilderness is
right on the edge of the
rough."
Rated
"#1 Place to Play in Colorado" by
Golf Digest and "Friendliest Golf
Course in Colorado" by the Rocky
Mountain News in 1998, Pole
Creek's 7,107-yard layout cruises
over rolling fairways, valley
meadows and broad bent greens.
Lodgepole-lined tree shots and
demanding water hazards including
a creek, two ponds and five lakes
force the best to their ultimate
tests. And shots like the #9 hole
on the Ridge 9, with its 135-foot
drop from tee to green and view
of Winter Park Ski Area, the
Continental Divide and the Indian
Peaks Wilderness Area, offer
enough challenge and diversity
for every golfer in the cart. All
three courses play to par 36, and
with four sets of tees per hole,
Pole Creek is the mountain
golfer's Formosa.
This
summer, escape to Pole Creek Golf
Club, where some of the
friendliest and most competent
Golf Pros in Colorado teach group
and individual lessons on a grass
driving range, immense putting
greens, and practice bunkers.
Pole Creek is also home to Grand
County's favorite 19th hole, the
Pole Creek Tavern, which
specializes in American cuisine
for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
