Sound
Habits Essential To Consistently
Performed Golf
Swing
"Do
you wear your seat belt when you
drive? Do you remember to dial
the 303 area code when calling a
friend? What does this have to do
with golf instruction? Well, the
golf swing requires complex motor
skills and can be performed
consistently with the help of
habits that are fundamentally
sound. At GolfTEC, using
computers, we map the
biomechanical motions of your
swing and use digital video to
illustrate the similarities and
differences between your swing
and swings of tour players. This
allows us to accurately and
factually establish your good and
bad habits. Once your faults are
determined, we can prescribe
specific drills that when done
correctly, will ingrain the
proper habits.
Habits
are learned responses that are
created over periods of time
through reinforcement
conditioning. Research has proven
that human beings have three
distinct learning styles:
auditory, kinesthetic and visual.
Auditory learners will be more
responsive to verbal instruction.
The kinesthetic style of learning
applies to those persons that
will improve the most through
ìfeelî drills. And
the visual learners benefit from
the use of video feedback and
imitation methods. Being able to
recognize and adapt to the
different learning styles is a
trait found in all successful
golf instructors.
At
GolfTEC we have the ability to
quickly identify your swing
faults. Using computers, a
GolfTEC PGA professional will
establish your baseline
measurements and swing
tendencies. For the auditory
learner we will start with a
traditional approach to
instruction by discussing the
mechanics of your swing while a
video tape records the session
for future review. In over a
decade of instruction, one of the
biggest gripes I have heard is
that students have difficulty
remembering important points from
their lessons. The video allows
us to eliminate this excuse for
not improving. Secondly, we use
biofeedback tones, the closest
thing to shock therapy for a golf
swing. Biofeedback tones help
students improve at an
accelerated rate because they
enable students to FEEL the
proper positions throughout the
swing and can help form good
habits. Setting biofeedback
success tones can help bridge any
communication gap between
instructor and student because
both parties recognize the sound
and can confirm right from
wrong.
Society
today has been bombarded by the
advancement of multimedia
technology causing an increase in
visual learners. The majority of
the students we teach are from
the visual learning style
category. By now most people have
seen their golf swing on video
either in the backyard or at a
high-tech learning center. If you
haven't seen your swing on video
yet, then treat yourself to a
golf lesson that utilizes
multiple camera angles. Seeing
your swing will help you better
understand your strengths and
weaknesses. The digital video
system we use is a quick and
powerful teaching tool. We have
discovered that the faster the
feedback, the faster the swing
changes. Using digital video from
multiple camera angles lets us
play the role of ìinstant
replay judgeî so that we
can evaluate the swing and recap
it to the student. Swings in slow
motion can be better analyzed by
the instructor and easily
described to the student without
any guesswork.
