Wedge Technology
Wedge Benefits Misunderstood

By Patrick Boyd
GOLFViews Contributing Writer

The game of golf has evolved over the past decade, the control and technique of persimmon has faded into the bomb and gouge technique of modern golf. In this evolution, many elements have been lost in the aspect of feel. To begin with, the soft balata covered wound balls have turned into multiple covered solid core balls with higher compressions and lower spin rates. In turn, the ball goes further with your newfangled 460cc titanium driver, but now you’re closer to the hole than before and in order to maximize on these new scoring opportunities you need to have wedges that fit you.

There has been an increased focus in attaining maximum theoretical distance with a driver with the rise of launch monitor technology over the past few years, but why have wedges been a neglected aspect of fitting? After all, last I checked you most likely have one in your hands more often in a round than a driver.

For starters, what specifically benefits an individual in the wedge department has been greatly misunderstood over the years. A vast majority of golfers do not have wedges that fit them as well as they could and almost all golf manufacturers design wedge lines with various degrees of bounce, but typically the sole shapes they employ are universally one-dimensional. By changing bounce angle and not taking into consideration the rest of the sole grind, the amount of dynamic playability a wedge has for an individual is limited.
The top professionals for years have had wedges made specifically for them. They know what they need and their respective manufactures make them what they need. Until now there haven’t been wedge offerings to the general population that comprehensively cover every particular you need to take into consideration when choosing a wedge to best suit your swing type and shots you like to play. The top professionals get what fits them and you should too.

For six years the folks at Scratch Golf have been looking into what makes a specific sole shape work with an individual’s swing type and why. After thousands of fittings under their belt and tour feedback, they have done their homework in finding what works. This research makes finding something that fits your game as easy as finding a Scratch Golf dealer to properly fit what meets your needs. From Scratch’s retail JLM line which includes 5 grinds to the Tour Department that can manufacture literally anything you can come up with literally from scratch, you’re going to find something that very likely works better than what you have now. Needless to say, when you have a wedge that properly fits your needs and tendencies the quality of impact greatly increases, giving you more control, consistency and spin than having something that doesn’t suit you.

Couple the ability to fit a specific shape to your swing type with the softest forged Japanese steel in the industry and you have quite possibly the ultimate wedge for you.
