Chip n Run

I agree that the spontaneous celebration after Justin Leonard's putt vs Olazabal in the Ryder Cup was inappropriate, and I believe the U.S. players agree and have apologized. However, many of the European players and community can't let it go. I was reminded of the continued sniping regarding sportsmanship when I read the other day that one of Sergio Garcia's pro-am partners at a tourney in Spain threatened to punch him out . Apparently, the guy thought Sergio had given him a bad yardage estimate. Now that's bad sportsmanship!.......I can't believe that Arnold Palmer has sold out to Ely Callaway and is now promoting the sale and use of non-conforming golf clubs. And though I haven't always agreed 100% with some of his positions, like the Casey Martin issue, I have always thought of him as the standard bearer of the rules and conduct of golf. I don't see how the USGA can continue having him as one of their principal spokesmen after this.......#...After watching David Duval hit shot after shot at the pin, I'd say he has recovered from his mid-season back problems. Now he has to fine tune the rest of his game......I think I'm going to start saving up for some golf lessons in Sweden. Have they got the best looking golf pros on tour? Carin Koch, Liselotte Neumann, Helen Afredson, the Sorenstam sisters, wow! The LPGA's my new favorite TV sport venue.........I feel sorry for the European players that get paid in the new European common market euro. They have to rush to the bank to convert it to dollars or pounds as soon as they can. I read a story while on a recent trip, where a player waited too long and lost a chunk of his winnings when the value of the Euro dropped..........What's the point of bringing out a non-conforming driver that costs $800 to $1000+? The average to high handicap player, which is about 70% of the market, can't afford that price, and they are the players that would benefit the most. The first company that brings out a driver with similar playing features in the $250 to $300 range is going to make a lot of money..........The last few years the Senior Tour has been the Hale Irwin, Gil Morgan and Bruce Fleisher show. This year though has been the Larry Nelson show. The player referred to as "The Quiet Man" when he played on the PGA Tour has put on a record setting performance this year, with six wins and $2.65 million in winnings. He still has a chance to set a new record for highest winnings in a season. His last win at the Vantage tourney was his fourth win for his last five tournaments entered, and he placed second in the fifth one........Tiger Watch: He has now played 45 consecutive rounds of par or better, extending his already PGA Tour record. His current winnings this year of $##9.031 million is a record. With a $1 million prize for first place at the WGC event at Valderama in Spain, he could hit $10 million in prize money. Unbelievable! I read something about a week ago that I believe noted that his winnings in the last 4 years is already #1 in career earnings.

This was related to me as a true story....

Back in the 40's it was a lot easier to get an exemption to the U.S. Open. As a result, an unidentified player was allowed to tee it up, and with a mighty swing he lashed a ball #into a tree just off the tee box that ricocheted over his shoulder and back toward the clubhouse. His bewildered partner approached the tee box official and asked, "Am I up, or is he away?"

The following excerpts are the last from my review of "Golfs Most Outrageous Quotes," by Bruce Nash and Allan Zullo, with Bill Hartigan.

"If profanity had any influence on the flight of the ball, the game would be played far better than it is."
Horace J. Hutchinson, golf historian.

"Some golfers lie awake at night, and brood on what went wrong; I'd rather think of what went right, It doesn't take as long.
Dick Emmons, golf fan
