Wolf Creek at Paradise Canyon

Mesquite Nevada...

The Colorado Golf Vacation Destination

It's hard to believe that a city that was incorporated a little over 16 years ago is now one of the hottest golf vacation destinations in the West. There wasn't even a stop light until 1998. Mesquite, that little gas stop on the way to Las Vegas, is now the fastest growing city in Nevada.

Mesquite's location makes it ideal for vacationers. Just 37 miles south of St. George, Utah, and 80 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada., Mesquite is centrally located between some of the most popular outdoor recreation sites in the region. Lake Mead, Lake Powell, Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks and Brian Head Ski Resort are all within a day's adventure. Mesquite also offers many recreational opportunities for families of all sizes with horseback riding, skeet and trap-shooting range, camping, fishing, hayrides, nationally recognized day spas and of course, golf.

The construction of world-class championship golf courses was a natural choice for Mesquite real estate developers and for the vacation resorts to draw more visitors to town. The golfer demographic provided Mesquite with guests that have a higher median income who spend their discretionary income on resort vacations that offer something for the entire family. Put all of that together with Mesquite's natural desert terrain, which has proved to be ideal for creating unique and exciting golf courses, and you have the beginning of a successful venture into the golf industry.

Mesquite golf courses have the best of both worlds when it comes to attracting golfers. Those who want to escape the sweltering heat of the Las Vegas summers make the hour-and-a-half drive to Mesquite where the temperatures are cooler and the golf is less expensive. Those who live on the Wasatch Front flock to Mesquite's sunshine and warmer climate when the snow flies and the temperatures drop below freezing. Mesquite currently has four championship 18-hole golf courses and one very challenging nine-hole course.

The Palms Golf Course

The Palms golf course, is the oldest 18-hole course in Mesquite. Set amidst the desert landscape of sagebrush and tumbleweeds, the course offers an island of palm trees and lush green fairways with a number of water hazards ready to catch the wayward shot. The course provides golfers with two contrasting nines. The front nine is constructed of fairly flat wide fairways with the lake hazards providing the real challenge on the opening nine. The back nine is more dramatic with elevated tee boxes and a few forced carries of desert canyons. The par-3 14th hole is a memorable one with a 210-yard shot over a ravine to wide green with little depth. Catch your breath, because the next hole is a 507-yard par-5 off an elevated tee that features a 114-foot drop to the fairway below.

The Oasis Golf Course

If elevated tee boxes with dramatic shots to slot canyon fairways is your game then the Arnold Palmer designed Oasis is your course. Meandering through the foothills surrounding Northern Mesquite and offering some of the most dramatic scenery in the area, the Oasis isn't for the faint of heart. The course offers narrow fairways, many bunkers, water hazards and undulating fairways that leave the golfer with few level lies. Like most courses in Mesquite, it is important to choose the right tee boxes at the Oasis. Don't look for a signature hole here at the Oasis. Palmer and developer Dennis Rider used the natural landscape of the desert to provide the dramatic. The 363-yard 6th hole is a great example. The green is placed deep within a box canyon the looms over all that reach the green. The 517-yard 8th hole features an elevated tee box that is best viewed from the tips, but don't play it from there unless you can provide a 250-yard drive.

The Vista Nine

More dramatic holes await you at the Vista nine-hole course. Every bit as scenic as the Oasis, these nine holes, which can be played with the front nine at the Oasis are also challenging and rewarding. The challenge starts with the first hole. This 535-yard par 5 features a narrow slopping fairway that makes you regret not hitting a bucket of balls to loosen up your swing. The next two holes are guarded by water requiring proper club selection. Water again appears on the six-hole, practically surrounding the green. The eighth hole has a beautiful elevated tee box dropping a hundred feet to the green below. Make this course a part of your golfing experience.

The CasaBlanca

The Cal Olsen designed CasaBlanca Golf Course is a challenging course that is a great test to the scratch golfer while being fair and playable for the middle to high handicappers. The desert course is built with plenty of water. The Virgin River meanders through four or five holes and more lake water can be found on eight other holes. If you are counting, that is 13 holes of the 18 with water present. The water works. It is an important piece to the whole. Not only does it provide hazard areas but also perhaps more importantly, it provides wetland area for the desert fowl. The natural beauty of the course is only enhanced by its design. The links style course with the first nine running parallel to the back nine is quite possibly the only course in Mesquite that you would even consider walking. A twilight nine in the cool evening air may just tempt you to carry your bag.

The golf course offers golfers of all levels plenty of challenge. The number one criteria for the builders was playability and with five sets of tees providing 5,200 yards from the forward tees to 7,011 yards from the championship tees, the course is enjoyable for everyone. Whatever your handicap or skill the CasaBlanca golf course delivers all the elements of a great game of golf.

Every course has a signature hole and at CasaBlanca that hole is the challenging 17th. This 454-yard, par 4 will require a long drive and long iron shot to the green. Surrounded by wetlands and bunkers, this hole narrows as it comes to the green leaving little room for error. A par here is a great score, but don't feel too content. The closing hole is no pushover either. Good accurate length is again required off the tee box and fairway bunkers trap errant shots. The amphitheater green is surrounded by bunkers, making accurate approach shots necessary for a chance for par.

Wolf Creek at Paradise Canyon

The talk of the town is the grand opening of the Wolf Creek Golf Course at Paradise Canyon. The 18-hole championship golf course will surely be one of the most beautiful you will ever play. The golf course was placed within the canyon walls of the desert and features dramatic elevation changes with a premium on shot making. You can't escape the breathtaking views from all directions as you marvel at your surroundings.

This high-end daily-fee course winds up and down canyon walls at 7,018 yards. It is named after the bubbling stream that meanders through five of the 18 holes. Features like a tee box eleven stories high and an uphill, 200-yard par-3 make this course unique. Challenging and picturesque from every hole, Wolf Creek requires every club in your bag and a camera. Check the scorecard before your round to choose your tee box. Tee boxes are set for playing ability of all handicap golfers. To ensure a great experience, choose the tee box to suit your handicap.

The drama begins at the very first hole. The 579-yard par-5 hole is visually stunning and may throw off your distances. Many sugar-white tee boxes surround the fairway and green but a well struck drive and a good second shot should have you placed for par or birdie. The closing holes on the front nine require golfers to navigate Wolf Creek, which not only provides a hazard but also an opportunity to enjoy the scenery. The eighth hole is memorable with an island green. You will want to play this hole over and over again, but move on because the back nine offers more beauty to be enjoyed.

By the time you finish your round at Wolf Creek you will be surprised at its playability and beauty. Early morning and late afternoon tee times that offer long fairways shadows will provide you with a challenging and stunning golf experience.

Mesquite Golf

The best asset of the collection of golf courses in Mesquite is the variety. You can play five different golf courses on five different days and never get the same feel or look from one to another. Each course has its own distinct personality that will have you coming back for years to come. The co-op established between the CasaBlanca and Oasis resorts provides plenty of golf packages of all the Mesquite courses for you to choose from.
